The name 'Bangalow' was inspired by the prolific growth of 'bangalow palms' in its original sub-tropical bushlands. From the first land selection in1881 until the 1900s, the settlement developed into a thriving town and grew vigorously, its rural fortunes tied to the dairy industry.
Today Bangalow - town and countryside - has become an attractive location for many 'tree changers' who find it an appealing area to raise families. The strong and protective community spirit has inspired some popular annual events like the annual Billy Cart Derby and Christmas Eve celebrations, a robust annual Agricultural Show, plus classical music and film festivals, celebrations of body, mind and spirit, jazz festivals, historical exhibitions and art and craft shows.
Its main street has attracted one of the Shire's most upmarket collections of art and rug galleries, restaurants and shops.
