Brunswick Heads

East of Mullumbimby, and located where the Brunswick River reaches the sea, is the town of Brunswick Heads. The Brunswick River was named by Captain Rous in 1828 after a German princess, Queen Caroline of Brunswick, the wife of King George IV of England.

With the arrival of the first cedar cutters in the late 1840s, the first settlement on the river was established. By the early 1920s, Brunswick Heads was reputed to be a ‘most desirable’ holiday haven.

Today, Brunswick Heads is appreciated as a low-key holiday town and fishing village. With its safe swimming and holiday (caravan) parks, it's always had devoted fans who prefer its gentler pace, though recent incomers have introduced footpath dining and upgraded the standard of cafes, shops and restaurants, and started more events such as the 'Kites and Bikes' festival to add to the more traditional 'Fish and Chip' festival (celebrating fishing and wood-chopping).
